Forno Nosso Manà - Brasil
The Forno Nosso Mana is a Bakery in the rural area of the city of Igarassu, 27 km from Recife, capital of Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil. It is situated in the heart of Santo Antonio, which has about 4,000 inhabitants who live in low socio-economic opportunities. The majority of them are families with an average monthly income of about € 60 per month.
It is the only bakery within 4 km that produces products by its own. It is open every day and sells bread and biscuits to the people.
The oven, made some years ago by Mais Onlus with the help of a group of dear friends who allowed the restructuration of old buildings, employs five women of the area that are in absolute need to support the family due to lack of work of their husband or the lack of them.
The Forno Nosso Manà is involved in the project of rehabilitation of the adjacent Food School Santa Maria, which brings together some forty women who are pregnant or breastfeeding and childrens up to two years and uses the multimistura: a mixture of nutrient bran flour, rice, cassava leaves and seeds used to enrich the poor and deficient supply of most families.
Courses are also organized periodically to generate income, ie, cooking classes for sweet and salty that allow women who participate to learn a trade and become independent.
